Gary, Indiana man sentenced to 20 years in prison for 2009 home burglary in Beecher area

 

JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that a Gary, Indiana man was sentenced Wednesday (October 27, 2010) to 20 years in prison for a home burglary he committed in the Beecher area last year.

 

Randall Syler, 28, of the 3600 block of West Ridge Road, was convicted in April on one count of residential burglary at the conclusion of a jury trial. He broke into a house in the 31000 block of Klemme Road on Aug. 21, 2009 and stole a laptop computer, jewelry and money.

 

Residential burglary is a Class 1 felony that carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.  Syler, however, was eligible for up to 30 years in prison because he had a prior burglary conviction. He was on parole for that prior burglary when the Beecher offense occurred, and he had an out-of-state conviction for robbery as well.

 

Circuit Judge Daniel Rozak handed down the 20-year sentence. Syler is awaiting trial on two additional charges of residential burglary that occurred in the Beecher area in August and September of 2009.

 

Assistant State’s Attorneys Chris Regis and Adam Capelli prosecuted the case.
